City of Glasgow College Department of Creative Industries have a Grand Design on Success

The Department is one of the most dynamic and progressive of this acclaimed institution, as such they have specialisms in both traditional and the innovative methods in the production of items created by their enterprising students.

Its in the area of product design that there is a real need for 3D printing this new technology allows them to make objects quickly, easily and with a fraction of the cost of commissioning model building work.
Commenting, Barbara Aitkenhead, Curriculum Head;

“We feel that students really connect with their work when they can see very quickly see how things look and feel in the real world, the use of 3D printers we recently procured from Abergower, plays a very important role in the output of developed final solutions. In this respect it has now become such an essential element at our end of year show where the students produce such beautiful finished work”

3D is therefore a very important part of the overall resources that are now deployed to help and assist students to meet their creative ambitions and its overall simplicity to take a digital design and bring it to life, students can express themselves in such a visible and tangible way.

The Stratasys F130 3D printer and the Ultimaker 3 system offer a huge range of options for students going forward, they are easy to use, offer huge versatility of objects they can produce, link to standard design software packages and allows students the ability to work on their designs and resultant objects in ways that were almost impossible 10 years ago.
